I was born in Canada and lived there for 12 years. I lived in a small town in the Rocky Mountains. When I was 13, I moved
to Los Angeles, where I went to high school. I went to UCLA for my Bachelor's degree, studying International Relations.
My "unofficial" area of concentration was the Middle East. I had some really outstanding professors who were absolute scholars
on the region. While at UCLA, I enlisted in the Army Reserve. I loved it so much that I decided to become an officer and I
enrolled in ROTC.
I graduated with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1997. I was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, where I attended the
Infantry Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, and Ranger School. My first duty station was the 10th Mountain Division at
Fort Drum, New York (30 miles south of the Canadian border). While at the 10th, I deployed to Bosnia for a peacekeeping mission
and then to the Jungle Operations Training Center in Panama. I also completed a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation at
Fort Polk, Louisiana.
I returned to Los Angeles and worked as a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch. I moved to San Jose and attended graduate school
at San Jose State University, for a Masters of Science in Accountancy. After graduating, I spent three months learning Spanish
in Guatemala and then backpacking through Central and South America. I returned to the U.S. and started working as an auditor
for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
In the meantime, I continued to be an active member of the California National Guard. I transitioned from Infantry to
Military Intelligence and attended several professional courses at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, the Army's Intelligence training
center. I received mobilization orders at the end of 2004 for either Iraq or Afghanistan. My deployment date is January 15,
2005.
